A multi-generational oral history project about women in the skilled construction trades — from Baby Boomers who paved the entryways to Gen Z apprentices who are building the future.
Electricians, ironworkers, carpenters, plumbers, crane operators, welders, and more — the Journeywomen Project is gathering stories from women across the trades, from varied backgrounds and experience levels, from retired journeywomen to today’s apprentices. While the project has roots in the Pacific Northwest, we welcome stories from across the U.S. and abroad.
Women represent just 3–4% of journey-level trade workers in the United States — yet their stories span generations, crafts, and communities. AI is upending industry, just as a mass exodus of Baby Boomers are set to retire. At this pivotal moment in the history of labor and industry, it's crucial for stories of pioneering tradeswomen to be told, recognized, and shared.

Whether you want to be interviewed, stay updated on the project, or just say hello — please reach out. No commitment required. All stories are shared only with your permission.
